As a PhD social worker I have a deep passion about nonprofit organizations, the staff who work there, and the clients they serve. As a woman who has run her own small business, I also have a deep passion for small business owners, the staff who work for them and the dreams they are trying to make real.

In previous posts, you have heard me describe my attempts to create a new professional path after I closed my business and moved to Atlanta from DC. I have struggled to combine my love and recent learning about technology with my passions. But this path has not been straight. I have worked in web design, photography as story telling, and training on social media and technology.

Last fall, I presented at the annual conference of the Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. It was here that the lights became brighter to help me see my path.

Many of you have visited my site on nonprofits and social media at www.tellthestorynow.com. You have seen the video that I used in that presentation and seen the powerpoint at my slideshare site. Since then, my world has gotten very exciting.

I spent the last three days at the Nonprofit Technology Conference (NTC), put on by the Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN). I am so pumped I couldn’t stop, so I am updating my blogs to bring you all up to date. The purpose of this post is not to give you all the details of the conference material (God knows there is enough on twitter to take you several days to read.) My purpose is to tell you how it focused my direction.

I am ready to be your social media guru. I can teach it, talk it, work it, build it, create it, manage it, analyze it and make it a real part of your organization. Just ask me. Call me. Talk to me! Tweet me – @TellTheStoryNow. Whatever.

I believe that social media is about using tools to tell your story (NOW)! I also believe photography is a tool to tell a story. The circle is complete, the path (at least for now) is before me. Of course I know the only constant is change, but from now on I will be describing my changes in these two places (oh, yeah, and all the other social media sites of Tell the Story Now and my present and future clients).

So if you are looking for me these days, you need to visit Tell the Story Now and Photos by Peggy. Oh, yeah and any of the social media sites that follow from the buttons in the sidebar. Come and hear the stories! You never know what you will find!!

There are several components in Palmiter Consulting. One of those is Tell the Story NOW: Social Media for Nonprofits. We had the wonderful opportunity to offer a workshop at the Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers Annual Converence on Social Media in Nonprofits. It was well attended and we loved doing it! It was so exciting, that we thought we would share the information here are well. So – enjoy.

I was privileged to present a workshop on social media and nonprofits at the Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers annual conference. We had great attendance and participation and I enjoyed it to the max. I hope everyone there did as well.

I promised all the participants that the workshop presentation would be available here by Monday, so I decided to get moving ahead of time. This post is several things. It is a place to get all the information that was discussed at the workshop. I am also using it to demonstrate some of the things I mentioned.

If you would simply like to just download the file, here is the pdf of the powerpoint presentation. If you click on the link, the file will open and you can save a copy. Please remember that creative commons attribution means to reference me and the site if you use the material. I hope you will use the information to start your own social media campaign.

In addition to the presentation, I would like to do a couple of demonstrations that you might find useful.

1. The powerpoint presentation is on my Slideshare Page and my Wikispace. Both are not very developed yet, but I think putting the presentation there lets you see the beginning of the process. Beth Kanter’s wikispace shows you how it can look!

2. The Youtube video will be hyperlinked in the powerpoint and the pdf, and will also be embedded in this post. If you are interested in the process, here it is.

I am embedding it into this post. I make sure I am working on the HTML design page in wordpress, I go to the youtube video. Either beside the video or underneath it (depending on your monitor) you will see the url and the word embed. Next to the code in the embed box is a little cog that is named customize. If I click on that, I can change the format and the size. I select what I want for my site, I copy the code and then I paste it into my post. VOILA! Here it is below!

OK folks, have at it. My only request is that you comment in the comments section so I can get feedback and we can start a conversation.

T he one thing I know about the world today is that it changes. If you find something annoying, or troublesome, or insurmountable, all you have to do is wait a moment and it will change. As I help my mother move out of her home of 40 years to move in with me, I am more aware of that reality than ever before. Don’t get me wrong, my Mom is doing great! At almost 80 years old she is active and self-sufficient. The stay with us will be temporary until she gets her bearings in a new city and new surroundings. But the process of her move causes me to think about process in general.

Many of you are probably wondering why in the world I am discussing this on a professional consulting website. Simply because consultation is also about process. And in a changing world, consultation is also about change. I have been working for the last year to better define my business model and accurately describe what I offer my customers. It has not been an easy process. I think I’m pretty smart, and I really thought I should be able to figure it out. But my life path has been about as changing and nontraditional as the world in which we live.

So, when you look at this site, you will find that I have created Palmiter Consulting as a process rather than a product. The links on the side called ME are current projects. The links called samples are websites or social media sites I have developed for my projects or my clients. The links called making a difference are what matters to me.

What I know how to do is work with all kinds of people to make their way through change. It may sound simple, but it’s actually a rare skill. That’s the difficulty in defining Palmiter consulting. I have always been about adaptation. I have worked in the nonprofit sector, earned a PhD, taught college students, run training seminars, taught foster parents, run a photofinishing business, worked as a photographer, taught older adults to use a computer, designed web pages, business cards and brochures, and continued to write. All of those skills are what you will find when you work with Palmiter Consulting. Don’t think they would be helpful? Don’t bet on it! Give us a call!
